UNILAG Restores Students’ Union Government After Nine-Year Suspension
In a landmark development for student unionism in Nigeria, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has officially reinstated its Students’ Union Government (SUG), ending a nine-year hiatus. The restoration culminated in a highly anticipated election, ushering in a new generation of student leaders to represent the interests of the "Great Akokites."
The University Senate and Management took the decision to unban the union following extensive consultations aimed at fostering a more inclusive and democratic campus environment. The move is seen as a major step toward strengthening student-management relations and providing a formal platform for student advocacy and leadership development.
New Leadership Emerges
The elective process, which drew significant participation from the student body, saw the emergence of a new President and General Secretary, alongside other executive members. These newly elected officials are tasked with rebuilding the union's structures and establishing a transparent, accountable, and proactive representative body.
A Decade of Transition
The union was originally suspended in 2016 following a series of protests over campus welfare issues. During the intervening nine years, student interests were managed through faculty and departmental associations, as well as various ad-hoc committees.
Management’s Vision
The UNILAG management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, expressed optimism that the reinstated SUG will operate within the university’s extant rules and regulations while prioritizing constructive engagement and intellectual diplomacy over confrontation.
The restoration has sparked widespread celebration across Nigerian academic circles, with alumni and sister institutions congratulating the UNILAG student body on reclaiming its voice in university governance.
