UNILAG Senate Honors Renowned Economist Professor Ndubisi Nwokoma Upon Retirement
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Senate celebrated the distinguished career of Professor Ndubisi Nwokoma, a renowned Professor of Economics, as he prepares for retirement.
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Senate gathered today to honor Professor Ndubisi Nwokoma, a distinguished Professor of Economics, as he prepares to retire from active service.

“I am fulfilled and happy that I had the opportunity to work in this institution of higher learning,” remarked Professor Nwokoma, reflecting on his illustrious career. Known for his trademark smile and towering intellect, he expressed gratitude to the UNILAG community for the chance to contribute to research, learning, and scholarship.

Born on May 12, 1954, in Ukwa-East LGA, Abia State, Professor Nwokoma's academic journey began at the University of Ibadan, where he earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. degrees in Economics between 1980 and 1984. Joining UNILAG in 2001 as a Lecturer 1, Professor Nwokoma climbed the academic ladder, achieving the rank of Professor in October 2010. He distinguished himself further by serving as the Head of the Department of Economics from 2012 to 2016 and as the Director of the Centre for Economic Policy Analysis and Research, UNILAG, among other roles.
Outside UNILAG, Professor Nwokoma made significant contributions to national and international bodies. He served the National Universities Commission (NUC) on various accreditation teams and represented UNILAG on the Board of Directors of the Financial Institutions Training Centre (FITC). His international roles included serving as a Special Assistant to the Director General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange and Chief of Financing, Industry, and Investment at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa.
A Fellow of the Nigerian Economic Society and member of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers of Nigeria and African Econometrics Society, Professor Nwokoma supervised ten Ph.D. graduates, over two hundred Master’s dissertations, and numerous undergraduate research projects. His scholarly contributions include over seventy publications in esteemed journals, both locally and internationally.
As Professor Ndubisi Nwokoma bids farewell to UNILAG, his legacy remains an inspiration to students, colleagues, and the broader academic community. We celebrate his remarkable achievements and wish him a fulfilling retirement.
