The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is gearing up for its 54th Convocation Ceremonies, scheduled to take place from January 15 to January 19, 2024. In a pre-Convocation Press Conference, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, revealed that a total of 17,464 students will be admitted to various undergraduate and postgraduate degrees during the ceremonies.

Breaking down the statistics, Professor Ogunsola announced that 10,578 students would receive first degrees, while 6,886 would be awarded postgraduate degrees. The graduating class includes 340 First Class graduates, with 97 from Management Sciences, 57 from Science, and 47 from Engineering. The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted distinctions, revealing that 39 distinctions came from the Faculties of Pharmacy, Basic Medical Sciences, and Clinical Sciences.

The pre-Convocation event brought exciting news as David Oluwatomiwa Akanmu from the Faculty of Engineering emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.00. Ibrahim Abiodun Quadri, from the Faculty of Management Sciences, was recognized as the Best Graduating Student in the Humanities with a CGPA of 4.94.

Professor Ogunsola emphasized the University's commitment to internationalization, noting that 31 Master's students, supported by a World Bank grant, will graduate at the ceremony. The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the achievements of the University's Business School, with Abiola Oluyemisi Itakpe named the Overall Best Graduating Student.

The upcoming convocation will witness the award of honorary doctorate degrees to globally acclaimed scholars, Professor Toyin Falola, Professor Phyllis Kanki, and Professor Attahiru Jega, for their significant contributions to various fields.

Professor Ogunsola concluded the conference by expressing gratitude to stakeholders and the media, stating, "Finally, I want to again thank you all, members of the Press, for your support in the last one year and look forward to your coverage of our 54th Convocation Ceremonies." UNILAG anticipates a grand celebration of academic achievements and milestones during the upcoming ceremonies.
