UNILAG Students Grateful for ASUU Scholarships

UNILAG Students Grateful for ASUU Scholarships

In a heartwarming event at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), 12 students, including two visually impaired indigent students, expressed their joy and relief as they received scholarships from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Nofisat Ogundare and Balkis Agbede, along with their peers, received cheques totaling N1.4 million at the ceremony held at UNILAG.

Nofisat and Balkis, both facing visual impairment challenges, shared their gratitude, emphasizing that the scholarship funds would significantly contribute to addressing their pressing needs on campus. Nofisat, a 400-Level student, and Balkis, a 200-Level student, each received N200,000, while the other 10 students were granted N100,000 each.

Bilkis, who lost her eyesight two years ago after battling glaucoma for nine years, highlighted the scholarship's timing, noting its impact on settling bills and providing for other needs. The financial support comes as a lifeline for these students from indigent backgrounds, making a substantial difference in their campus experience.

The ASUU-UNILAG Chairman, Prof Kayode Adebayo, and immediate past chairman, Dr Dele Ashiru, explained that the scholarship awards align with ASUU's national directive to ease the financial burden of deserving students in public universities. Adebayo disclosed that ASUU designates November 12 annually to recognize and celebrate its members, with scholarship awards being part of the occasion.

In adherence to ASUU's national initiative, ASUU-UNILAG presented N200,000 each to two indigent students and an additional N100,000 each to 10 other deserving students, totaling N1.4 million. The selection process involved applications and interviews to ensure the beneficiaries were truly deserving.
