A commercial bus driver, identified as Lukman, tragically passed away while ferrying passengers to the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) on Friday. The incident, which occurred en route from Sanrab to UNILORIN, has left the campus community in shock and mourning.

According to eyewitnesses, the unfortunate event unfolded when one of the passengers noticed Lukman experiencing distress while behind the wheel. Reacting swiftly, the passenger, whose identity remains undisclosed, took control of the bus to prevent a potentially catastrophic accident.

In a statement shared via a viral WhatsApp message, the passenger recounted the harrowing experience: "Our bus driver just died on the road while driving us from Sanrab to UNILORIN. I was sitting in the front but I wasn’t looking up because I was reading the Qur’an on my phone. The other person beside me just called my attention shouting Baba multiple times. By the time I looked up, he was already gasping and the bus was drifting away from the road. I had to press the brake, take control and bring it to a halt."

Tragically, Lukman was pronounced dead upon arrival at the institution’s clinic. The swift actions of the passengers averted a potential disaster. The entire sequence of events transpired within a span of 30 minutes, underscoring the suddenness and severity of the situation.

Sulyman Malik, a colleague of the late driver, expressed profound shock over the incident, highlighting the unpredictability of life. Malik reminisced about Lukman's recent greeting to him, juxtaposing it with the suddenness of his demise. Lukman was laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.

Confirming the incident, UNILORIN’s Corporate Affairs Director, Mr. Kunle Akogun, described it as profoundly unfortunate, emphasizing the ephemeral nature of life. The university community mourns the loss of Lukman, acknowledging his dedicated service in ferrying students safely to their destination.
