UNILORIN Holds Maiden Annual Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Lecture
Dr. Hameed Nuru urges global leaders to prioritize food security at the University of Ilorin's first Annual Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Lecture.

Dr. Hameed Nuru, Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) at the African Union Office, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, emphasized the critical role of preventing conflict to ensure food security during his keynote address titled ‘Navigating the Nexus of Food, Security, Safety, and Disease: A Holistic Sustainable Future and Economic Prosperity’ at the inaugural Annual Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Lecture, University of Ilorin. The event, held in July 2024, was dedicated to Prof. Saka Nuru, a pioneering figure in Nigerian veterinary medicine and Ilorin's first professor.
Dr. Nuru highlighted Nigeria's inclusion among global food crisis hotspots, underscoring that conflict remains a primary driver of starvation and malnutrition. He urged global leaders to prioritize food security, suggesting that reallocating a fraction of global military expenditures could significantly alleviate food shortages worldwide.
The lecture also addressed economic shocks and climate crises as additional barriers to food security. Dr. Nuru advocated for youth involvement in commercial farming, emphasizing the need for technological innovations and value addition in agricultural practices.

In his remarks, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole SAN, represented by Prof. Suleiman Funsho Ambali, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services) of the University of Ilorin, praised Prof. Saka Nuru as a unifying force and trailblazer who has positively impacted Nigeria's veterinary landscape.
Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. Oyebisi M. Azeez, celebrated Prof. Saka Nuru's enduring legacy, highlighting his pivotal role in shaping the profession and touching countless lives.

The event drew notable dignitaries including former Vice Chancellor Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, Kwara State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Toyosi Adebayo Thomas, and former Managing Director of First City Monument Bank Mr. Adam Nuru.
In her response, Dr. Rukiyat Aduke Odekunle, Federal Commissioner representing Kwara and Kogi States, expressed gratitude for the recognition of her father's contributions and announced significant donations to the University and its student body.
