A University of Maiduguri student has brought to light a pressing issue affecting students at the institution, regarding the implementation of the NELFUND program.

The program, designed to alleviate financial hardship, has been compromised by the university's registration system and management decisions.
The university's installment registration system allows students to pay 60% of their registration fee in the first semester and the remaining 40% in the second semester. However, during the NELFUND approval process, the university had already completed its first semester, leaving 80% of students who had paid 60% of their registration fee uncertain about the remaining 40%.

The university management's decision to use NELFUND disbursements to settle outstanding debts for students who made partial payments, without addressing the remaining 40% balance, has raised concerns. It is alleged that this decision may impose additional financial burdens on students, contradicting the program's purpose.
The student has urged NELFUND to establish a committee to monitor the situation and ensure that funds are used appropriately, emphasizing that the program is a loan, not a gift. NELFUND must guarantee that the money is utilized entirely for student registration to achieve its intended goal.
