UNIMED Graduates First Set of Medical Students, Including Dentists, in Record Time

The graduating students include 96 medical students, 12 dental students, and 75 physiotherapy students. Among the undergraduates, 19 achieved first-class honors, 217 attained second-class upper division, 94 earned second-class lower division, and 15 received third-class honors.

UNIMED Graduates First Set of Medical Students, Including Dentists, in Record Time

The University of Medical Science (UNIMED) in Ondo, Ondo State, is set to make history by graduating its inaugural cohort of medical students, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria's education landscape.

During a press conference preceding the university's 5th convocation ceremony, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, the Vice Chancellor, announced that UNIMED would confer degrees upon 183 medical students, including two sets of dental practitioners, out of a total of 585 graduating students.

Prof. Fatusi expressed pride in UNIMED's role as Nigeria's first specialized medical and health sciences university, highlighting the institution's commitment to transforming health professions education in the country.

He emphasized the unprecedented nature of this achievement, noting that no Nigerian university had previously produced physicians within its first decade of existence. Furthermore, UNIMED has distinguished itself by producing two sets of dentists within its first nine years.

Prof. Fatusi also highlighted UNIMED's success in accreditation exercises conducted by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and various professional regulatory bodies. He noted the university's establishment of 13 new courses and its introduction of innovative programs such as the 6-year Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) program and the Transitional Doctor of Physiotherapy program, the first of its kind in Nigeria.

Additionally, UNIMED remains the only university in the West African subregion with four degree programs in medical rehabilitation, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, prosthetics and orthotics, and audiology.

Prof. Fatusi underscored UNIMED's commitment to advancing African herbal medicine (AHM) and integrating it into orthodox medicine, aiming to harness Africa's rich medicinal heritage for global health advancement.
