The Bayelsa State-owned University of Africa Toru-orua (UAT) in its bit to improve research and innovation, yesterday 6th June 2024 inaugurated her Post Graduate School Board at the main campus in Toru-orua.

The Bayelsa State-owned University of Africa Toru-orua (UAT) in its bit to improve research and innovation, yesterday 6th June 2024 inaugurated her Post Graduate School Board at the main campus in Toru-orua.

Inaugurating the PG School Board, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Solomon Tamarabrakemi Ebobrah said the board is inaugurated to ‘admit, train, examine, and award certificate degrees in Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, M.Phil and PhD’, in line with Section 5, sub-section 1(a) of the University of Africa Law which empowers the University to establish Campuses, Colleges, Faculties, Centres, Schools, Departments and other teaching and research Units within the University, as it may, from time to time, deem necessary or desirable. 

Addressing members of the Board, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the University needs to improve on graduate research thus the need for the Post Graduate School. He said the Board’s focus should be to produce people who are sufficiently grounded in research so that the UAT can say it has contributed significantly to real manpower development in a manner that affects her immediate community.

Speaking at the Inauguration, the Chairman of the UAT Post Graduate School Board, Professor Demola Jolayemi said that the newly inaugurated board is poised to deliver on its mandate within the shortest possible time. He added that all things being equal the board is working towards taking in the first set of students in the 2024/2025 academic session. He further stated that the Board will adhere to all NUC regulations regarding setting up post-graduate programmes. He further hinted that UAT will adhere strictly to the NUC standard on the number of semesters per programme: A PGD Programme will run for 2 semesters for full-time studies, while part-time will be 4 semesters; Masters Degree will be 3 semesters for full-time and 6 semesters for part-time; PhD will be 4 semesters for full time and 6 semesters for part-time studies.

Members of the board are Prof. Demola Jolayemi as Chairman, Prof. John Alfred-ockya, prof. Francis Sikoki, Prof. Torupere Koroye, Dr. Godwin Poi, Prof. Jackson Akpojaro, Prof. Rotimi Olajide, Prof. Tony Ganagana, Dr. Richard Uzaka, and Dr. Don Onogbosele; while Barr. Douye Odi-owei and Mr. Terry Ezonfade would serve as the secretariat.

The Inauguration was held at the Vice-Chancellors Board Room with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Barclays Ayakoroma, and the Registrar, Dr. Akpoebi Adesi in attendance.
