University of Ibadan Collaborates with ILO and LWR to Combat Child Labor

University of Ibadan Collaborates with ILO and LWR to Combat Child Labor

The University of Ibadan has taken a significant step in the fight against child labor by partnering with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Lutheran World Relief (LWR) to train parents, teachers, and community leaders on child labor issues.

During a six-day workshop held from February 26 to March 2 at the Balogun Subomi Conference Centre of the University, participants from Idanre and Ifedore Local Government Areas were trained on the adapted International Labour Organisation’s SCREAM (Supporting Children’s Rights through Education, the Arts, and the Media) module.

Ms. Vanessa Phala, the country director of ILO, emphasized the importance of addressing child labor, especially in sectors like cocoa and artisanal mining. She highlighted the partnership between ILO and University of Ibadan in mainstreaming the SCREAM module into the university's General Education Studies (GES) programme.

The workshop aimed to create awareness about the negative impacts of child labor among stakeholders in cocoa and artisanal mining sectors. It also focused on sensitizing participants on the importance of promoting children's rights through education and community involvement.

Dr. Agatha Kolawole, the national project coordinator for ACCEL AFRICA, emphasized the role of participants as change agents and influencers in eradicating child labor. She urged full participation and cooperation during the training to effectively address the issue.

The workshop was part of the Child Labour Education and Resilience (CLEAR) project initiated by LWR, with the goal of reducing child labor practices among cocoa farmers in Ifedore and Idanre local government areas. Mr. Olawale Awoyemi, the deputy chief of Party of LWR, highlighted the project's objectives and its impact on addressing child labor in the cocoa value chain.

The University of Ibadan's Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETel) played a crucial role in organizing the workshop. Dr. Adedoyin Aguoru, the director of CETel, expressed gratitude to the facilitators and participants for their dedication to combating child labor.

In her closing remarks, Professor Ronke Baiyeroju, the ACCEL team lead and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of UI, acknowledged the efforts of the University of Ibadan in developing and adapting the SCREAM module to the Nigerian environment.

The collaborative efforts of University of Ibadan, ILO, and LWR underscore the importance of collective action in addressing child labor issues and promoting children's rights through education and community engagement.
