The University of Ibadan (UI), through its Faculty of Nursing, has received Professor Bukola Salami of the University of Calgary, Canada, in a strategic academic engagement aimed at deepening research collaboration and institutional partnership between both universities.

The visit was part of ongoing efforts to establish a formal framework for academic cooperation, including the proposed development of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions.

Speaking during the courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor’s office, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to research-driven partnerships, stressing that meaningful academic advancement is best achieved through institutional collaboration.

He expressed optimism that discussions with the University of Calgary would lead to a mutually beneficial agreement that would strengthen research output, academic exchange, and institutional development.

According to him, the University of Ibadan, as Nigeria’s premier university, is working toward consolidating its position as a leading postgraduate institution driven by research, innovation, and global partnerships, with the broader goal of producing highly skilled manpower for Nigeria and Africa.

He further emphasized that collaboration between global institutions remains essential in addressing complex academic and societal challenges, noting that the proposed partnership would enhance research development, staff training, academic cooperation, and knowledge exchange.

On her part, Professor Bukola Salami stated that the visit was primarily to explore the possibility of a formal Memorandum of Understanding between both institutions.

She described the University of Ibadan as one of Africa’s leading universities in terms of ranking, academic excellence, and research output, noting her long-standing relationship with the Department of Nursing, now Faculty of Nursing, spanning over a decade.

She also highlighted the University of Calgary as one of Canada’s leading research-intensive universities, particularly strong in research funding and academic excellence, adding that both institutions share complementary strengths that make collaboration strategic and sustainable.

Professor Salami expressed confidence that the engagement would produce long-term academic and research partnerships, including joint projects and knowledge exchange initiatives.

The Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, Professor Prisca Adejumo, who led Professor Salami on the visit, described her as a distinguished scholar with expertise in nursing science, health equity, migration health, and global health research.

She explained that the visit was intended to promote academic collaboration, mentorship, research engagement, and capacity building within the faculty, while also creating opportunities for broader institutional interaction.

According to her, discussions on collaboration in nursing education, research development, and capacity building have been ongoing, and the visit provided an opportunity for deeper engagement with members of the faculty.
