University of Ibadan Students Protest 10 -Hour Electricity Supply Policy, Demand Tuition Fee Reversal

Students of the University of Ibadan (UI) have taken to the streets in a mass protest against the recently implemented 10-hour daily electricity supply policy by the university’s management. he students requested the withdrawal of the electricity rationing policy and called for a guarantee of uninterrupted power supply within the school. Additionally, they demanded a complete rollback of all fees, not just a reduction, with refunds for those who had already made payments.

 Students of the University of Ibadan (UI) have taken to the streets in a mass protest against the recently implemented 10-hour daily electricity supply policy by the university’s management.

The protest, which was marked by its size and intensity, caused disruptions in lectures and transportation on campus.

In response to the protest, the Council of Hall Chairpersons and the Students Union Government issued a memo on July 17th, outlining the students' demands. The students requested the withdrawal of the electricity rationing policy and called for a guarantee of uninterrupted power supply within the school. Additionally, they demanded a complete rollback of all fees, not just a reduction, with refunds for those who had already made payments.

“The School authority, in collaboration with maintenance, must rescind the memo on electricity rationing,” the memo stated. “Effective immediately, there should be a total reversal of all fees—not just a reduction. Refunds must be provided to those who have already paid.”

The Students Union also condemned the reported victimization of three UI students – Aduwo Ayodele, Olamide Gbadegesin, and Nice Linus – who participated in a peaceful protest on May 13th, 2024. The students' union demanded an end to the alleged victimization of their peers.
