University of Lagos Denies Over 2,000 Applicants Admission Due to JAMB's Failure

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has reportedly denied admission to more than 2,000 applicants due to the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) failing to upload their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) results on their Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) profiles.

The affected candidates, predominantly students who used awaiting results during their JAMB Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) application process, complied with UNILAG's instructions to upload their results within the specified timeframe. Nevertheless, they were denied admission because UNILAG could not access the results uploaded on the JAMB portal during the admission process.

According to a source familiar with the situation, UNILAG's management decided to penalize these applicants for JAMB's failure by rejecting their admission. The source stated, "These applicants applied to UNILAG with WAEC awaiting results, a common practice as they have the opportunity to subsequently upload their results once released by WAEC. This was done within the time frame UNILAG requested for uploading on JAMB's CAPS for determining cut-off marks and the admission process."

"Paradoxically, nearly 2,000 applicants were denied admission, and UNILAG's admission office claimed that the affected applicants' WAEC results were not on JAMB's CAPS when they retrieved the results. It's noteworthy that the WAEC results UNILAG claimed were missing from CAPS were indeed available on the platform."The source raised concerns about JAMB's software not adequately maintaining uploaded data and UNILAG's apparent reluctance to engage with JAMB to address the problem, potentially devastating the dreams of these innocent students.

Efforts to obtain a response from UNILAG's management were unsuccessful. The university's spokesperson, Ibraheem Alagba, was contacted but had not responded to a message at the time of reporting. Calls to the vice-chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, also went unanswered, and she did not respond to a text message.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by aspiring students and the need for institutions and examination bodies to ensure a smooth admissions process to avoid adversely affecting students' educational pursuits.
