University of Lagos Senate Honors Retiring Professors Okpuzor and Egonmwan
In a dignified ceremony held on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, the University of Lagos Senate paid tribute to two esteemed members of its academic community, Professor Joy Okpuzor and Professor Rosemary Egonmwan, as they concluded their illustrious careers in the university service.

Professor Joy Okpuzor, a distinguished figure in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, marked her retirement on February 28, 2024, while Professor Rosemary Egonmwan, renowned for her expertise in Environmental Physiology of Animals and Conservation, is set to retire on March 10, 2024.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, conveyed heartfelt congratulations to both professors, highlighting their exceptional service not only to the University of Lagos but also to Nigeria at large. She emphasized their significant contributions across various capacities within the university and their invaluable role in shaping future leaders.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the university community, Professor Ogunsola extended warm wishes for good health, contentment, and continued success in their post-academic endeavors.
In response, Professors Okpuzor and Egonmwan expressed their appreciation for the honor bestowed upon them by the University Senate. They commended the UNILAG community for providing a nurturing platform for their academic and professional growth, enabling them to make meaningful contributions to knowledge and mentorship.
Professor Joy Okpuzor commenced her academic journey at the University of Lagos, earning her Ph.D. in 1991 and achieving the rank of Professor in 2010. With an impressive publication record and a history of mentoring numerous postgraduate students, she leaves behind a legacy of academic excellence and institutional leadership.
Throughout her tenure, Professor Okpuzor served the university in various capacities, including Chair of accreditation panels and leadership roles in professional societies, such as the Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology.
Similarly, Professor Rosemary Egonmwan's distinguished career spans decades of dedicated service to academia and beyond. Joining the University of Lagos in 1982, she steadily progressed to become a Professor in 2007, leaving an indelible mark on the Department of Zoology.

Professor Egonmwan's contributions extended beyond the university walls, as evidenced by her appointment as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vita Foam Nigeria PLC. She previously served as an Independent Non-Executive Director and contributed significantly to the company's growth and strategic direction.
As they bid farewell to active academic roles, Professors Okpuzor and Egonmwan leave behind a legacy of excellence, mentorship, and dedication. The University of Lagos community extends its deepest appreciation for their invaluable service and wishes them a fulfilling and prosperous retirement.
