University of Maiduguri Alumni Association's Inaugural AGM Faces Scrutiny

In a strongly-worded statement, concerned members of the University of Maiduguri Alumni Association, both from the FCT Chapter and worldwide, have voiced their disapproval of the apparent violations of the association's constitution and established protocols during the inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on October 14, 2023, at J-K Gadzama Court in Abuja.

Denial of Members' Rights: The statement highlights concerns regarding the denial of entry to numerous members who were unjustly denied access to the AGM. The directive to allow only five members from each chapter was issued less than 48 hours before the AGM, effectively disenfranchising many members from exercising their right to vote on crucial issues, including amendments to the association's constitution.

Presiding Officer Contravention: The statement questions the delegation of the Acting President's responsibilities to someone who wasn't a member of the Executive Committee or any Committee of the Association. This delegation contravened the constitution and raises concerns about the legitimacy of the decisions made at the AGM.

Formation of Election Committee Violation: The AGM did not adhere to the requirement to elect an Election Committee of Members during the AGM, instead ratifying a pre-prepared list and failing to reflect the diversity of the association.

Constitutional Amendments: The statement highlights a lack of adherence to the established procedure for amending the constitution, raising concerns about the transparency of the process.

Exclusion of Chapter Reports: The FCT Chapter's report was deliberately excluded from the program brochure, preventing the chapter from showcasing its achievements.
