The three construction workers who were initially trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed five-storey building at Dennis Memorial Grammar School in Onitsha, Anambra State, have been successfully rescued. The building, which was still under construction, gave way at approximately 7:15 am on Wednesday, trapping three workers within its debris.

According to Mr. Victor Metu, Chairman of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, the painstaking rescue operation yielded positive results, with all three trapped individuals rescued alive from the wreckage before midnight on Wednesday.

"We rescued the first trapped person around 6 pm on Wednesday, the second person around 9:30 pm, and the third around 11:45 pm," disclosed Mr. Metu, highlighting the tireless efforts of the rescue team throughout the day.

However, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Paul Odenigbo, shared a different result. According to him, "The whole of the three people trapped by the collapsed building have been brought out. But one of them was already dead when the rescue team brought him out."

In response to the incident, Mr. Metu announced plans to petition the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to establish a panel of inquiry comprising professional experts and engineers. This panel will conduct a comprehensive analysis of the collapsed building to determine the root cause of the collapse.
