Yobe State University ASUU Calls Off Strike After MoU with State Government

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Yobe State University has officially called off its indefinite strike action, which began on July 11, 2025.

The decision follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the union and the Yobe State Government on July 29, 2025.

The strike was triggered by the state government's alleged failure to address several long-standing demands, including :

The union demanded the implementation of the new minimum wage and consequential adjustments.

 ASUU sought proper placement of academic promotions and annual salary increments.

The union demanded payment of 35% and 25% salary awards from January 2023.

ASUU also sought payment of postgraduate facilitation allowances for staff.

Following the signing of the MoU, the ASUU president granted approval to call off the strike action, as agreed upon during the branch congress on July 25, 2025. All academic staff have been requested to return to work, with the state government committing to make up for the two weeks lost during the strike .

The Acting Registrar of Yobe State University, Mallam Garba Ahmadu Girgir, had earlier announced the resumption of full academic activities for both undergraduate and postgraduate students starting from July 28, 2025 .

The Yobe State Government has expressed its commitment to resolving outstanding issues and improving the welfare of academic staff. Governor Mai Mala Buni recently approved the implementation of the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) and Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure (CONTISS) for university staff .
