Abia Football Clubs Look to Abia Secondary School Unity Cup for Future Football Stars
Enyimba, Abia Warriors, and Abia Comets turn to Abia State Secondary School Unity Cup to scout future soccer stars, aiming to revitalize local talent and bolster their squads.
In a bid to bolster their squads with homegrown talent, reigning champions of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), Enyimba Football Club of Aba, along with Abia Warriors and Abia Comets, have turned their attention to the Abia State Secondary School Unity Cup. This move comes as the opening ceremony of the tournament is set to kick off on Friday.
Nwaobilor Ananaba, the Abia State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, emphasized the importance of utilizing grassroots competitions like the Unity Cup to identify and nurture young talents. Ananaba revealed that the tournament will see the participation of approximately 1000 students from secondary schools across all Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

Ananaba highlighted the opportunity this event presents for scouts from Enyimba, Abia Warriors, and Abia Comets to discover promising young players. He further disclosed ongoing plans to facilitate the exposure of standout talents to the European sporting market, underscoring the commitment to nurturing and promoting local talent.

The lifting of the ban on the Umuahia township stadium by the NPFL was also celebrated by Ananaba, who acknowledged the efforts of Governor Alex in facilitating the return of Abia Warriors to Umuahia and in supporting sports and youth development initiatives across the state.

Additionally, Ananaba announced plans for the construction of a 35,000-capacity FIFA standard stadium in the state, signaling a significant investment in sporting infrastructure.
Echoing Ananaba's sentiments, George Obioma, the State Director of Sports, expressed optimism about the potential of the Unity Cup to unearth new sporting stars across various disciplines, including football, handball, volleyball, athletics, and weightlifting. Obioma emphasized the administration's commitment to revitalizing sports excellence in Abia State.
