Akure High Court Grants N1m bail Each to 3 UTME Impersonators
Relatives of the defendants has expressed concern that the defendants might spend the Christmas and New Year in prison custody, citing the difficulty of meeting the bail conditions.
A Federal High Court in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, has granted stringent bail conditions to three individuals arrested for impersonating others during the UTME registration examination. The accused, Timilehin Akinwale, Olayinka Mustapha, and Peter Okereke, were apprehended on February 15, 2023, at Aina Awaw International College, Ilu Abo, a designated JAMB registration and examination center.
The trio was arraigned and subsequently remanded in prison custody in May 2023. During the resumed hearing on Thursday, Justice T.O Adegoke granted each defendant bail in the sum of N1 million. The sureties, who must own a company registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and operate within the Akure metropolis, were also mandated by Justice Adegoke.

The court ruled that the sureties must provide evidence of tax clearance for the past three years and deposit the original copies of their company registration certificates with the Court Registrar. Additionally, each defendant is required to deposit the sum of one million in an account provided by the Court Registrar.
Justice Adegoke further stipulated that both the sureties and the defendants must write an undertaking affirming the defendants’ commitment to attend their trial until the case’s conclusion.

The Prosecuting Counsel, M. I. Osimen, called upon a witness, Oyegun Gabriel, the Technical Officer who detected the suspicious registration transactions. Gabriel presented evidence and submitted the JAMB registration printout concerning the second defendant. He detailed how the defendants were arrested at the Aina Awwal CBT Centre, Akure, for impersonation.

Gabriel also informed the court that the defendants had given a written statement at the office of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Akure Command.
