Al-Hikmah University Pays N72m Power Bill in Three Months Due to Tariff Hike
Al-Hikmah University in Ilorin, Kwara State, grapples with a substantial increase in electricity costs, paying N72 million over three months following a tariff hike, prompting plans for solar power integration.
In response to the recent power tariff hike affecting educational institutions across Nigeria, Al-Hikmah University in Ilorin, Kwara State, has disclosed paying a staggering N72 million to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBDEC) over the past three months. This revelation came from the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Noah Yusuf, during a press briefing commemorating his fourth year in office.
Prof. Yusuf outlined the financial impact of the tariff adjustment, noting that prior to the hike, the university's monthly electricity bill stood at N8 million. However, following the reclassification into 'Band A', the bills surged to N25 million, N29 million, and N18 million in successive months.
"To address this challenge, the university has adopted an energy mix strategy," Prof. Yusuf explained. "We are embarking on phased installations of solar-powered systems across our campuses, aimed at mitigating these rising costs."
