Behind the Oyo School Abduction: Makinde Points to Intelligence Failure
Governor Seyi Makinde says the recent school abduction in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State exposed serious failures in intelligence gathering and information-sharing. Speaking during the launch of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in Ibadan, Makinde urged residents to report suspicious activities promptly, stressing that security agencies cannot work effectively without public cooperation. He described the new police unit as a major step toward tackling kidnapping and violent crime in the state and pledged continued support for security operations.
Makinde Sounds Alarm After Oyo School Abduction, Unveils New Police Crime Unit
The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has raised concerns over what he described as a major intelligence failure following Friday’s school abduction in Orire Local Government Area, warning residents against keeping silent about suspicious activities in their communities.
Speaking on Saturday in Ibadan during the inauguration of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the Nigeria Police Force, Makinde said the tragic incident exposed a dangerous gap in information-sharing between residents and security agencies.
According to the governor, early findings suggest that suspicious movements in the area were not reported on time, making it difficult for security operatives to act swiftly and prevent the attack.
“When you see strange movements or suspicious behaviour, please report it,” Makinde urged residents.
The governor stressed that security cannot be achieved by government alone, emphasizing that community cooperation remains critical in the fight against kidnapping and violent crime.
New Security Unit Launched in Oyo
Makinde described the newly launched VCRU as a strategic and rapid-response security initiative aimed at tackling rising cases of violent crime across the state. He noted that the unit is the first of its kind in South-West Nigeria and represents a renewed commitment to strengthening Oyo State’s security architecture.
The governor also revealed that his administration has continued investing heavily in surveillance systems, mobility support, intelligence-sharing, logistics, and collaboration among security agencies.
After observing a live demonstration by officers of the unit, Makinde praised their readiness and professionalism.
“I watched the demonstration by the unit and I want to say that you are truly prepared,” he said.
Families Affected by the Tragedy
Reacting emotionally to the Orire abduction, the governor extended condolences to affected families and communities, acknowledging the pain caused by the incident.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families that have lost their loved ones. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” he added.
Makinde further warned that insecurity threatens not only lives but also economic growth and social stability, stressing that public safety must never be taken for granted.
He commended the Inspector-General of Police and the Oyo State Police Command for establishing the VCRU, describing the project as a successful partnership between federal and state authorities.
“The initiative is federal, but the impact is local,” the governor concluded.
