The Management of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) has declared a state of emergency on the University environment, signaling a renewed institutional drive toward environmental sustainability and compliance.
In a special announcement issued by the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Environmental Sustainability), Deans of Faculties, Directors, and Heads of Departments and Units were formally notified that heightened attention is now being placed on the condition of the University’s physical environment.
As part of the enforcement strategy, the COOU Sanitation Monitoring Committee, in collaboration with the Environmental Vanguard Volunteers (COOU-EVV) and the Students Environmental Police (SEP-COOU), will commence active implementation of an initiative tagged “Operation Keep COOU Clean.”

Beginning Monday, 23 February 2026, enforcement teams are scheduled to conduct visits across Faculties with a clear mandate to drive the Management’s environmental agenda. The initiative is aligned with the University’s Climate Action and Environmental Sustainability Roadmap, which outlines institutional commitments to ecological responsibility and sustainable campus practices.
The University warned that acts such as indiscriminate littering, blockage of waterways, and other environmentally harmful practices will attract serious sanctions against individuals or groups found culpable. The directive underscores a zero-tolerance stance on environmental negligence within the campus community.
Faculty leaders and administrative heads have been urged to ensure strict compliance within their respective units as the enforcement exercise commences.
