Dr. Peter Ekemezie Sues Nnamdi Azikiwe University Over Dismissal, Seeks Vice Chancellorship
Dr. Peter Ekemezie has filed a lawsuit against Nnamdi Azikiwe University, challenging his 2019 dismissal over alleged false accusations.
Dr. Peter Ekemezie, a prominent inventor and former academic staff member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (Unizik), has filed a lawsuit against the institution seeking the reversal of his dismissal and his appointment as Vice Chancellor.
Ekemezie, who previously worked at what is now Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, developed a patented automotive brake pad technology during his tenure.
In 2019, following his announcement to contest for the Vice Chancellorship of Unizik, Ekemezie faced allegations of fraud and forgery, which he claims were fabricated by his opponents. The ensuing false accusations led to his dismissal on October 10, 2019, which he argues was conducted without proper due process.

Ekemezie's legal action, filed at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) under suit No. NICN/AWK/40/2024, challenges the legitimacy of his dismissal and seeks to nullify it. He demands reinstatement as Vice Chancellor upon the retirement of the current Vice Chancellor, Professor Charles Esimone, in June 2024.

Additionally, Ekemezie is requesting an order for the suspension of the appointment of any new Vice Chancellor until his claim is resolved and a public apology from the university.
The court's decision on this matter could significantly impact the leadership transition at Unizik and the broader academic community.
