An anonymous source claimed that the police officers chasing Ayogu fled the scene immediately after the accident, only to return later to tow the wreckage to their station at Liberation Estate. In response to the incident, Tobias Oshim, the president of the Student Union Government, conducted a site inspection and a thorough examination of the accident location. Oshim stated that Ayogu Evans was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident. He further alleged that the location of the crash was unusual for the deceased, suggesting that he was there due to the police chase.

The SUG president revealed that an eyewitness, a tricycle rider involved in the accident, confirmed the police chase, involving three officers in a van. Union leaders subsequently met with the state police commissioner, Mrs Ogodo Augustina, to discuss the incident, emphasizing the need for justice for Evans and addressing the broader issue of police brutality in the state.

The police public relations officer, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, explained that the suspicious actions of the driver prompted the pursuit, which tragically ended with the fatal accident along Oriuzor Road.
