Economic Hardship: Corps Members Demand Rise in NYSC Allowance

In a bid to address the economic challenges facing them, some serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have called on President Bola Tinubu to consider increasing the allowances of corps members deployed across the country.

The concerned corps members, under the umbrella of Concerned Corp Members, highlighted the impact of the high cost of living on their financial well-being. They emphasized that the current monthly allowance of N33,000 is insufficient to meet their basic needs, particularly in light of the rising prices of goods and services in local markets.

Expressing their frustrations, the corps members revealed that many of them are compelled to engage in menial jobs to supplement their income, given the economic realities they face. They cited the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, which have made some necessities unaffordable luxuries for them.

Furthermore, the corps members highlighted the adverse effects of the economic situation on their living conditions, noting that some are resorting to risky activities such as fetching water from streams and rendering services on farms in exchange for food.

In response to these concerns, the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, assured that the issues raised by the corps members would be addressed. He emphasized that the Federal Government, recognizing the challenges faced by corps members, would consider them in its plans to alleviate the suffering of the masses.

Megwa clarified that while it is not the responsibility of the NYSC to increase corps members' allowances, the government is committed to reviewing the wages of civil servants, including corps members, to mitigate the impact of inflation and improve their financial well-being.

The corps members' plea underscores the need for proactive measures to address the economic difficulties faced by young graduates serving their country through the NYSC program.
