Emir of Lapai Cancels Tuesday Market in Honour of Deceased IBBUL Student

Tensions rose in Lapai on Monday as students of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, barricaded the Agaie–Lapai Road in protest over the killing of one of their own, Abdulwahab Jafar, by suspected armed robbers.

Jafar, a 200-level student of Science Education (Chemistry), was attacked in the early hours of Monday at his off-campus residence, Nda Kitabu Lodge, located opposite the university’s second gate. According to eyewitnesses, the assailants stormed the lodge around 2:30 a.m. and stabbed him in the neck. He was rushed to the General Hospital in Lapai, where he was later confirmed dead.

In response to the growing unrest, the Emir of Lapai, His Royal Highness Alhaji Umar Bago Tafida III, has cancelled the weekly Lapai Tuesday Market to honour the deceased student and to acknowledge the grief of the university community.

To address the security concerns raised by students and to restore peace, His Royal Highness further announced the imposition of a temporary curfew in Lapai. He also warned against individuals—both students and community members—who may be collaborating with or harboring criminal elements in the town.
