Exhibition on Northern Nigeria’s architectural heritage opens at ABU’s Kashim Ibrahim Library

A five-day exhibition on the earthen architectural heritage of Northern Nigeria organised by the Nigerian Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS-Nigeria) opened today at the famous Kashim Ibrahim Library (KIL) of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
The five-day activity will also take place in nine other academic departments of the University, including architecture, archaeology, sociology, theatre and performing arts, African languages, and others; and it will round off at the University Museum.
ICOMOS-Nigeria is a non-governmental organisation with a wide range of experts in academia and heritage practice, including emerging professionals who are critical for the future of heritage conservation in Nigeria.
The non-governmental organisation seeks to promote the protection and advance the sustainable conservation of monuments and sites in Nigeria through engagement with heritage enthusiasts, students and organisations at both national and international levels.
At the international level, ICOMOS is the only global professional organisation dedicated to the conservation of the world’s cultural heritage places, in addition to being one of the three advisory bodies to the World Heritage Committee under the 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention.
The event, according to ICOMOS-Nigeria President, Dr. Oluwatoyin Z. Sogbesan, would allow the non-governmental organisation and the University community to celebrate through the pictorial display of the restoration work on the old St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church building in Wusasa, Zaria.
Sogbesan also said that the conservation project was achieved through generous funding from Gerda Henkel Stiftung Germany.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Ahmed Doko Ibrahim, said the exhibition would add to the knowledge of the lecturers and students on the earthen architectural heritage of Northern Nigeria.
Earlier, members of the ICOMOS-Nigeria team were at the Senate Building of the University where they called on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala.
The President of ICOMOS-Nigeria, Dr. Oluwatoyin Z. Sogbesan, told the Vice-Chancellor the willingness of the non-governmental organisation to partner with ABU on heritage preservation and mentorship programme to protect and promote the heritage sector.
Sogbesan also said that through the partnership ICOMOS-Nigeria and the University would contribute towards educating and empowering the youths and communities on the need to protect the heritage.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Ahmed Doko Ibrahim, appreciated the team for the visit and for picking interest in the institution for partnership in such a vital academic area.
