FASU Gives Thumbs Up to LASU Ahead of 11th All Africa University Games
The Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) conducted its final inspection visit to Lagos State University (LASU) facilities in preparation for the 11th All Africa University Games, set to take place from September 20 to 29, 2024.

This historic event will be jointly hosted by LASU and the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
The inspection team, led by FASU Secretary-General Ms. Peninnah Kanenge, accompanying her were Mr. Ibrahim Tank Shuaibu, President of the West African University Games (WAUG), and Dr. Bawa Mohammed, President of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) and Chairman of the Organizing Committee.
The delegation commenced their assessment at the Sports Centre, where they inspected the newly upgraded basketball, volleyball, and handball courts. From there, they moved to the field and the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, which will host various indoor games during the competition.
Prof. Adenike Boyo, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) and Alternate Chairman of LASU, welcomed the delegation with enthusiasm in front of the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building. Speaking about the preparations, Ms. Kanenge stated, “Everything is on point,” while Dr. Bawa Mohammed added, “We are fully convinced that LASU is ready.”

The Academic Resource Centre, a magnificent four-storey edifice, was also on the inspection list. This center will host indoor games such as Chess, Judo, Karate, and Taekwondo. Additionally, the FASU Secretariat on the 5th floor of the Senate Building received scrutiny.
In a meeting with the Local Organizing Committee, Prof. Boyo, Alternate Chairman of LASU, expressed confidence in the joint efforts of both institutions. She stated, “We are united to ensure that the Games are not only successful but also a memorable and transformative experience for all participants.” Prof. Boyo also thanked FASU for entrusting LASU with the responsibility of co-hosting this sporting fiesta.
Dr. Mohammed, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, praised LASU’s preparedness. “After our inspection, the two universities, especially LASU, did not fall short. We have seen more than we expected,” he remarked.
Ms. Kanenge, the delegation’s Chairperson, echoed the sentiment of readiness. “From what we have seen so far, preparations are going remarkably well,” she said. “We are impressed with the level of commitment and involvement from top management of both universities.”
As the countdown continues, Lagos eagerly awaits the arrival of athletes from across Africa. The 11th All Africa University Games promises to be a celebration of sportsmanship, unity, and excellence on Nigerian soil!
FASU Secretary-General Ms. Peninnah Kanenge praised LASU, stating, “Your active participation has set the stage for what promises to be an extraordinary showcase.” She emphasized that “everything is on point.”
Mr. Ibrahim Tank Shuaibu, President of the West African University Games (WAUG), echoed the sentiment, affirming that LASU and UNILAG will represent West Africa admirably as hosts of the Games.
Under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, LASU continues to rally stakeholders. Prof. Olatunji-Bello promises that these Games will be “the best ever.”
During the inspection, the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee organized a publicity rally at both the Ikeja Campus and the main campus in Ojo. Their goal: to raise awareness among university members and the general public.
