Federal Polytechnic Bauchi Hosts Seminar on Journalism Ethics in the AI Era

The Mass Communication Department of the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi recently organized a seminar on "Journalism Ethics in the AI Era." The event, which was hosted by Mr. Ibrahim Khalid Sambauna, a lecturer in Media and Communication Ethics, was attended by students, faculty members, and guests from the media industry.
The seminar aimed to educate students on the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism, emphasizing the importance of fact-checking and verification in the digital age. The program featured presentations from experts in the field, including Dr. El-Sadiq and Dr. Bello Belli Madaki.
The event was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including the Head of Department of Mass Communication, Mallam Shamsu Dauda; the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Bauchi Chapter, Ahmed Kaigama; and representatives from Albarka, Eagle, and Bauchi Radio Corporation.
In his remarks, the NUJ Vice Chairman emphasized the importance of fact-checking and verification in the age of AI, stating that "we're in an AI era where people write news using AI without making verification." He urged students to always prioritize accuracy and truth in their reporting.
The Head of Department, Mallam Shamsu Dauda, also cautioned students on the potential pitfalls of relying on AI, stating that "the AI can be misleading sometimes, therefore the students should always be careful in terms of using AI."
The seminar was well-received by attendees, with Mr. Silas, a News Editor at Albarka Radio, praising the department for organizing the event. He noted that the seminar would provide valuable insights for prospective journalists on the importance of ethics and responsibility in the media industry.
The event concluded with entertainment performances by Fulani, Siyawa, and Igbo dancers, and a closing prayer by Pete.
Overall, the seminar was a resounding success, providing a valuable platform for students and media professionals to engage with the critical issues surrounding journalism ethics in the AI era.
