FG Minister Pledges Support to Obafemi Awolowo University on Wash Intervention
Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Rt. Hon. Barr Muhammad Bello Goronyo, has announced his commitment to supporting Obafemi Awolowo University in tackling water challenges in the University.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Rt. Hon. Barr Muhammad Bello Goronyo, has announced his commitment to supporting Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, in addressing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) challenges.
During a courtesy visit on Thursday, Rt. Hon. Goronyo announced his commitment, and emphasized the importance of WASH facilities on campus, particularly in alleviating water access difficulties faced by students. He urged the university management to explore Public-Private Partnership arrangements and engage with Federal Government intervention programmes such as SURWASH and PEWASH.
The Minister's commitment extends to dispatching a team of experts to assess the distressed Opa Dam, which supplies water to the institution. The team will evaluate sedimentation levels and address WASH-related issues, providing recommendations for resolving the Dam's problems.
Prof. Adebayo S. Bamire, Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, along with Pro Chancellor, Prof. Siyan Oyewebo and Consultant/Geologist Agugo Abraham, were present during the meeting.
Rt. Hon. Goronyo also highlighted the need for responsible management of government properties to prevent abandonment at the community level.
The University is set to benefit from these interventions pending necessary approvals and inclusion in the 2025 Budget.
