FMC Misau Launches Strategic Community Outreach to Combat 80% Maternal Anaemia Rate in Gwaram
The Federal Medical Centre Misau, has reinforced its commitment to delivering quality and accessible healthcare through a targeted community engagement in Gwaram District aimed at addressing critical maternal health concerns.
Recent clinical assessments conducted at the Centre revealed that approximately 80 percent of maternity patients present with anaemia, with about 60 percent of these cases originating from Gwaram District. Further laboratory findings identified dietary factors within the community as a major contributing cause.
In response to these findings, the Medical Director of FMC Misau, Dr. Rufai Abdu Dachi, constituted a delegation to undertake a community sensitisation and advocacy visit to Gwaram.

The outreach, which took place on Thursday, 2nd April 2026, was led by the Deputy Head of Clinical Services of the Centre Dr. Isma’il Tiamiyu. The delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Gwaram District Palace, engaged traditional leaders and community stakeholders on the importance of proper nutrition, maternal health, and early healthcare-seeking behaviour.
The team also visited the Gwaram Primary Health Care, where discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between FMC Misau and the PHC to enhance referral systems, improve service delivery, and ensure better health outcomes at the grassroots level.
Members of the delegation included Yakubu Ahmad Yaya, Head of Public Relations and Protocol Unit; Abubakar Garba Gumau, Theatre Manager; and Fatima Salihu Aliyu, Head of Nutrition Department, among others.
The engagement featured extensive deliberations on promoting health awareness, improving nutritional practices, and fostering sustainable partnerships between the Centre, the community, and primary healthcare providers. The initiative is expected to significantly contribute to reducing the prevalence of anaemia among expectant mothers in the community.
