France Partners with 13 Nigerian Universities to Advance Plastic Waste Management

France has forged a collaborative initiative with 13 Nigerian universities aimed at bolstering research capabilities and establishing micro plants to enhance plastic waste management across the country.

Under the sponsorship agreement, valued at €753,000 from the French Embassy Fund (FEF) Project 2024, several Nigerian institutions are set to benefit. These include Alex Ekwueme University, Bayero University Kano, Nile University, Covenant University, Babcock University, University of Jos (UNIJOS), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), University of Ibadan, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Yaba College of Technology, University of Calabar, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and University of Delta.

The FEF initiative, driven by the French Government's commitment to combat plastic pollution globally, aims to empower young Nigerian researchers to develop innovative solutions that promote a cleaner and safer environment, particularly within educational settings. Projects funded through this program are expected to be operational and sustainable by December 2025.

During a ceremony at the French Embassy in Abuja, Chargé d’Affaires of France to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Jean Francois Hasperue, highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change impacts, stressing Nigeria's vulnerability as one of the ten countries most affected by climate change worldwide. He emphasized the need for collaborative, global efforts to tackle environmental challenges such as air and plastic pollution.

"The rise of youth activism is pivotal in our fight against climate change. We must heed their voices and provide comprehensive responses to these challenges," Hasperue remarked, underscoring the importance of inclusive and participatory approaches in environmental stewardship.

Over the next 18 months, the initiative will focus on deploying micro plants at UNILAG and Nile University, launching research projects in sustainable development and gender inclusivity, and fostering academic exchanges between Nigerian and French researchers.

This collaboration marks a significant stride towards sustainable environmental practices and underscores the strategic partnership between France and Nigeria in addressing global environmental challenges.
