FUAMB Vice-Chancellor Leads Cultivation of Ginger, Turmeric, and Maradona F1 Papaya to Drive Agricultural Growth
The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Mubi (FUAMB), Professor Bitrus Dawi Tarfa, on Saturday, 23rd May, 2026, led the cultivation of ginger, turmeric, and Maradona F1 papaya at the University’s demonstration farm as part of efforts to enhance agricultural production, practical research, and food security.
The cultivation exercise, which took place at the University’s academic demonstration farm, was aimed at maximizing the advantage of the early seasonal rainfall for improved crop establishment and productivity.

The ginger and turmeric cultivation was supervised by the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Professor Jesse Silas Mshelia, alongside his technical team, who provided professional guidance throughout the planting exercise to ensure best agronomic practices.
Speaking during the exercise, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the importance of taking advantage of the early rains to support healthy crop growth and ensure high yields, particularly for root crops such as ginger and turmeric. He noted that the initiative forms part of the University’s commitment to practical agricultural training, research advancement, and sustainable agribusiness development.
Professor Tarfa further stated that the demonstration farm would continue to serve as a practical learning and research platform for students while contributing to the University’s internally generated revenue and broader food security agenda.
In a related development, the University’s horticulture team, under the supervision of Dr. Bamaiyi Chaka, successfully transplanted the Maradona F1 papaya variety at the demonstration farm. The team ensured proper spacing and careful handling of the improved seedlings to guarantee healthy growth and optimal productivity.
The simultaneous cultivation of ginger, turmeric, and Maradona F1 papaya further reflects FUAMB’s commitment to innovative farming practices, agricultural transformation, and regional food security initiatives.
