FULOKOJA Holds Re-Orientation Seminar on Students’ Attitude to GST, Charts Way Forward

The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) on Monday, January 26, 2026, held a re-orientation seminar aimed at addressing students’ attitude towards General Studies (GST) courses and identifying strategies for improving engagement and performance.

The seminar, which commenced at 10:00 a.m., brought together principal academic stakeholders of the University, including the Provost, Directors, Deans, Heads of Departments (HODs), GST coordinators, GST instructors, and examination officers, as well as student union leaders.

The event was hosted by the School of General Studies, headed by Dr Habeeb Ayoola Ayinla, who delivered the welcome address. He underscored the importance of GST courses in shaping students both academically and socially, noting that the programme is central to producing well-rounded and responsible graduates. According to him, the success of GST requires sustained collaboration and collective responsibility among coordinators, instructors, university management, and students.

Dr Ayinla further emphasised that GST plays a critical role in nation-building and character development, urging stakeholders to continuously evolve effective teaching, learning, and assessment strategies that reinforce the relevance of the programme. He expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, and the student body for their consistent support towards the growth and advancement of the School of General Studies.

Speaking as Chief Host, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, reminded students that the University operates a cumulative academic grading system, where performance from the first year contributes significantly to final degree classifications.

He cautioned against the tendency to underestimate GST courses, stressing that academic excellence is built from the very beginning of a student’s university journey. “You cannot wait until your final year to aim for a first class. Your journey begins from day one. Every course counts,” he stated.
