Professor Lukumon Adeoti of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has emphasized that the effective application of geophysics in subsoil investigation is crucial for preventing building collapses. Professor Adeoti made this assertion during his inaugural lecture, titled “Geophysicist and Human Survival,” held at the J.F. Ade-Ajayi Auditorium, UNILAG.

In his lecture, Adeoti explored various aspects of geophysics, including its applications in mineral exploration, oil and gas, agriculture, engineering, environmental, and forensic fields. He highlighted the significant role that geophysics can play in ensuring structural safety and environmental sustainability.

Adeoti identified waste disposal as a critical environmental issue, posing substantial risks to ecosystems. "Unlined disposal sites filled with household refuse and hazardous industrial waste represent a major threat, primarily through groundwater contamination caused by waste degradation and leachate migration," he explained.
