Good Citizenship is Key to Effective Leadership, Says UNILORIN VC

Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, emphasized the critical role of good citizenship in fostering effective leadership. Speaking at an event in Abuja on August 29, 2024, where the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, Surv. Abiodun Aluko, was inducted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management and Leadership (CIML), Prof. Egbewole highlighted the symbiotic relationship between citizenship and leadership.

Prof. Egbewole, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Suleiman Folorunsho Ambali, underscored that while leadership is essential, nurturing good citizens who support and attract effective leaders is equally crucial. He stressed, “Leadership in Nigeria is a reflection of our national character, and by fostering good citizenship, we can ensure that our emerging leaders are also of high calibre.”

The Vice Chancellor, also a Fellow of the CIML, elaborated on the importance of cultivating leadership qualities and aligning national values with the ideals expressed in the revised National Anthem. He noted that the Centre for Management and Leadership, with active participation from UNILORIN, is pivotal in discussions that aim to develop leaders capable of steering the nation towards prosperity.

Prof. Egbewole congratulated Surv. Abiodun Aluko on his induction and award, commending him for his contributions to leadership. In his acceptance speech, Surv. Aluko expressed gratitude for the honor, stating, “This award recognizes individuals who are deemed worthy by the CIML, and I am deeply appreciative. I will strive to be a commendable ambassador for this organization.”

Surv. Aluko, a former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, further emphasized the importance of living a life of integrity and leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
