Islamiyyah Abdullateef Emerges Best-Graduating Female Student at OAU with Remarkable Achievements
Acknowledging challenges faced during her studies, including the pressure of ICAN exams conflicting with school exams, Islamiyyah emphasized the importance of time management and prioritization in overcoming obstacles.
Islamiyyah Abdullateef, a 22-year-old Chartered Accountant, has secured the position of the best-graduating female student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) for the 2021/2022 academic session. Graduating with an outstanding Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.90 from the Department of Management and Accounting, she shares her academic journey and success in an interview.
Islamiyyah Abdullateef, the first child in a family of seven, had her primary and secondary education in Ibadan before joining OAU. Accounting was her first and only choice of course, and she successfully obtained it on her first attempt.

Leading her class from the first semester of 100 level to the eight semesters she spent at OAU, Islamiyyah expressed her elation at being named the best-graduating female student in the university. She received nine awards, including those from the Faculty, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Zenith Bank, Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN), and more.
Despite the challenges of managing time and occasionally sacrificing sleep, Islamiyyah maintained her consistent academic performance. She credited her friends, a supportive group of six, for contributing to her success. The friends formed a close-knit study group, attending lectures together and providing support when needed.
Active in extracurricular activities, Islamiyyah was a member of the Tax Club at OAU and held the position of tax manager at the Students’ Professional Bureau of Accountancy during her final year. She also participated in various competitions, took leadership roles in the Muslim body of her faculty, and tutored at a professional center.

Reflecting on her social life, Islamiyyah highlighted the importance of balancing academics and social activities. She enjoyed picnics with friends after exams and attended modest social functions. Her social life did not negatively impact her academic performance.

Taxation and Financial Accounting were the most interesting aspects of Accounting for Islamiyyah. Her religious faith played a crucial role in her academic success, as she held onto her principles of prayer and fasting.Beyond good grades, Islamiyyah acquired soft skills such as public speaking, teamwork, and time management, along with hard skills in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
