The King's College London has sought the support of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for its collaboration with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) to establish a medical school in Abuja.

During a working visit to the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, Deputy Vice President of King's College, London, Dr. Helen Bailey, expressed the institution's readiness to partner with TETFund and other relevant government bodies to establish the medical school in Abuja.

Dr. Bailey highlighted that the establishment of the Abuja medical school would address the issue of brain drain in the country, emphasizing King's College's commitment to collaborating with TETFund and Afreximbank to achieve this goal.

She also mentioned the memorandum of agreement signed with Afreximbank in November to explore the development of a medical school, nursing school, and research center co-located with King's College Hospital on the outskirts of Abuja.

In response, Arc. Sonny Echono assured the delegation of TETFund's readiness to provide support for King's College, London, in its partnership with Afreximbank to establish the medical school. He expressed delight over the project and reiterated TETFund's commitment to collaborating with various bodies in research to address challenges facing the country.

Echono emphasized the importance of creating local content in modern facilities to provide tertiary healthcare to the people, acknowledging the huge challenge faced by the country in the area of medical sciences.

He also mentioned TETFund's efforts to establish a modern research center in Abuja to attract researchers and postgraduate scholars from existing colleges and universities of medical sciences, among others. TETFund expressed its willingness to explore areas of collaboration with Afreximbank and King's College in facilities, staff training, and research.
