KWASU Humanities Lecture Spotlights Urgent Need for Stronger Humanities–STEM Research Collaboration in the Digital Age
The critical importance of interdisciplinary research collaboration between the humanities and STEM disciplines in addressing the challenges of the digital age was the crux of the 6th Humanities Lecture of the Faculty of Arts, Kwara State University, Malete.
The guest speaker, Professor Jeleel Ojuade, whose lectyre was titled “Beyond Data and Algorithms: Why Human Meaning Matters in the Digital World” on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, described the humanities as society’s operating system, stressing that they are indispensable in a world increasingly shaped by data, science, and artificial intelligence.
He noted that while STEM disciplines provided technical capacity and innovation, the humanities supply discernment, ethical reasoning, and social intelligence necessary to guide technological advancements.
According to him, the assumption that scientific knowledge alone can drive human progress is intellectually flawed emphasizing that the humanities must take a leading role in interdisciplinary conversations to ensure that scientific advancement remains grounded in human values and social responsibility.
Professor Ojuade, who is the Vice-Chancellor of Ojaja University, Eiyenkorin, Ilorn, urged universities to move beyond superficial talk on interdisciplinarity and commit themselves to serious structured collaborations between the humanities and STEM fields.
He stressed that both domains were co-producers of civilisation and must work together through integrated research and curricula capable of transforming technical innovation into meaningful, ethical, and socially responsive outcomes.
In his opening remarks, the Chief Host and Vice-Chancellor of Kwara State University, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh reiterated that KWASU remained committed to providing its students with a balanced form of education which exposes them to modern technology and digital skills.
