Lagos State Government to Upgrade Lagos State College of Health Technology to Autonomous Institution

The Lagos State government has announced plans to upgrade the Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHT) in Yaba to an autonomous institution. Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, made the announcement during a management retreat on September 27, 2024.

The Lagos State government has announced the upgrading of the Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHT) in Yaba to an autonomous institution, aiming to enhance its educational standards and operational structures. The announcement was made by Tolani Sule, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, during a two-day management retreat at the college held on September 27, 2024.

The retreat, themed "Creating a Global Standard Learning Culture for Lagos State College of Health Technology," focused on developing a conducive learning environment. Commissioner Sule emphasized that the upgrade would facilitate the establishment of independent employment, promotion, and salary structures for staff, distinguishing the institution from traditional civil service frameworks.

“The system of this college is still in line with those of the civil service, but it should align with other tertiary institutions to enjoy autonomy,” Sule stated. He highlighted that plans are in motion to upgrade the college's academic and physical infrastructure to enhance its role in fostering quality education.

Banji Fajonyomi, from the Department of Public Administration at Lagos State University (LASU), urged the college management to prioritize student engagement and learning over mere grade acquisition. He stressed the importance of creating a supportive research environment through workshops and seminars.

Additionally, Lukman Olumoh, chairman of the Economic Planning and Budget Committee in the Lagos State House of Assembly, called for the introduction of technology to improve revenue allocation for the institution's development. He underlined the need for effective communication regarding governance programs and projects to foster understanding, especially in resource-scarce environments.
