The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has announced that it is on high alert and ready to tackle the potential spread of cholera in Lagos.

In response to the recent death of five individuals and the hospitalization of numerous others exhibiting symptoms of the disease in Lagos, LASUTH’s management has stated that it has alerted its healthcare workers and other stakeholders to prepare for a potential outbreak.

The management of the state-run health facility issued a statement on its X handle @LASUTHIkeja on Wednesday morning, affirming its preparedness to handle the potential spread of the disease and stating that preventive measures in response to an outbreak have been initiated.

The statement reads: “We wish to inform the public that the management of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, has implemented precautionary measures in light of the cholera outbreak in Lagos. “Records show that a significant number of patients presented themselves on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, to various healthcare facilities across the state with symptoms consistent with cholera.

“Therefore, it is crucial to inform the public that LASUTH, the only state-owned tertiary healthcare facility, is on high alert. Our healthcare workers and other stakeholders have been notified and are prepared for a potential spread, as we are a referral facility.

“Furthermore, the management has implemented measures such as promoting good hygiene practices, providing clean water at all service points, and effectively treating those presenting with symptoms of gastroenteritis. “Finally, we encourage everyone to stay informed and take preventive actions to help curb the spread of the disease", the statement concluded.
