Legendary Nigerian Footballer, Segun Odegbami to Deliver FULOKOJA 15th Distinguished Public Lecture

We are thrilled to announce that the Federal University Lokoja's hook has caught another big fish, as Nigerian former professional footballer, Dr. Olusegun Odegbami, MON, will be live on our vibrant campus on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at 10:00am, to deliver the 15th Distinguished Public Lecture of the University, entitled: "Sport has the Power to Change the World - How True?"
Odegbami — ex-captain of the Nigerian Green Eagles and sports journalist, who played as a forward — won 46 caps and scored 23 goals for the Nigeria national team which he guided to its first Africa Cup of Nations title at the 1980 tournament in his homeland. Nicknamed Mathematical, he was famous for his skill on the ball, speed and precision of his crosses from the right wing.
He played for IICC Shooting Stars of Ibadan throughout his entire career, from 1970 to 1984. His last game was the 1984 African Champions Cup final defeat to Zamalek of Egypt. The African football legend's nickname "Mathematical" was first applied to Odegbami by Ernest Okonkwo, famed Nigerian football commentator, who worked with Radio Nigeria.
A Distinguished Public Lecture is a prestigious academic event held in a university setting, typically featuring a renowned expert or thought leader in a particular field, who is usually invited to share his/her knowledge, research, or experiences with members of the university community and the general public, to inspire, educate, and foster engagement.
It is against this backdrop that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, on behalf of Management, warmly invites members of the University community and the general public to this thought-provoking discourse.
