NICRAT and Abdulkadir Kure University Sign MoU to Advance Cancer Research
The National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Abdulkadir Kure University to advance cancer research and education.
The National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) and Abdulkadir Kure University (AKU) have announced a partnership aimed at enhancing public health through cancer research. This collaboration was formalized during a meeting held on Monday in Abuja, where NICRAT’s Director General, Prof. Usman Aliyu Malami, hosted the management team of AKU, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Muh’d Aliyu Paiko.
During the meeting, Prof. Malami emphasized the importance of a multi-sectoral and interdisciplinary approach to cancer care. He expressed NICRAT's commitment to collaborating with various stakeholders to improve cancer research and treatment in Nigeria. "We are determined to partner with all relevant institutions to enhance cancer care in the country," he stated.

Prof. Malami urged AKU to consider expanding its academic offerings to include courses in cancer-related fields such as Medical Physics, Radiography, and Cancer Nutrition, alongside the Complementary and Alternative Medicine programs already available at the university.

In response, Vice Chancellor Prof. Muh’d Aliyu Paiko expressed AKU's keen interest in collaborating with NICRAT to enhance cancer research, education, and nutrition. He noted that the university, inaugurated earlier this year, offers programs in areas such as Agribusiness, Allied Medical Sciences, Public Health, Nursing, Engineering, and Complementary Medicine.

Prof. Amaka Lasebikan, NICRAT’s Director of Research and Innovation, commended the AKU Vice Chancellor for seeking this collaboration, highlighting NICRAT's ongoing work with international organizations in complementary and alternative medicine. She also encouraged AKU to consider sending students for internships in cancer-related areas at NICRAT, which would provide valuable practical experience and contribute to improving cancer care in Nigeria.
Joining them at the meeting were Dr. Waziri Usman Muhd, Director of Cancer Prevention and Control, and Dr. Musa Ali-Gombe, Director of Clinical Services at NICRAT.
The partnership marks a significant step forward in the collective efforts to advance cancer research and treatment in Nigeria, benefiting both institutions and the broader public health landscape.
