The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), West Africa Affairs, has called on the federal government and the Federal Ministry of Education to reconsider the recent suspension of accreditation for degree programmes and certificates issued by universities in Benin Republic and Togo.

Earlier this year, the federal government halted the evaluation and accreditation of degrees from these countries following reports of certificate racketeering.Expressing concern over the impact of this decision, Comrade Joshua Olakunle, Director of NANS West Africa Affairs, highlighted the plight of Nigerian students who now face uncertainties in their academic pursuits and eligibility for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

"We are deeply concerned about the recent suspension of certificates issued by universities in Benin Republic and Togo. This decision affects thousands of Nigerian students who have invested their time, resources, and dreams in pursuing quality education," he stated.

Olakunle appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene, emphasizing the potential demoralization of students who sought education abroad due to limited opportunities in Nigeria.

He also commended efforts by Benin Republic's government to improve educational standards and proposed collaborative efforts to regulate and enhance university education in the sub-region.

"Many Nigerian celebrities have graduated from universities in Benin Republic and Togo, achieving great success in their careers. This demonstrates the potential of these institutions to produce talented individuals who can contribute significantly to Nigeria," Olakunle added.

NANS West Africa urged the Minister of Education, Professor Mamman Tahir, to swiftly review the evaluation report and address the concerns raised by Nigerian students in Benin Republic and Togo."We believe that education is crucial to unlocking our youth's potential, and we urge President Tinubu to use his influence to resolve this issue for the benefit of all stakeholders," Olakunle concluded.
