NOUN's FRSC Special Marshal Unit Concludes Intensive Training

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has taken a significant step towards safer roads within its jurisdiction with the official launch of its Special Unit, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Special Marshals.

The training programme for the unit, designed specifically for NOUN academics, commenced on Saturday, July 6, and concluded on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at the university headquarters in Abuja.

This initiative marks the establishment of a special unit within the FRSC's volunteer arm, dedicated to promoting road safety awareness and management within the NOUN community and its environs.

The final leg of the training focused on the importance of proper conduct and protocol.

The new marshals were meticulously instructed on the nuances of salutation: whom to salute, how to salute, and the appropriate movements to follow.

The rigorous training ensures that the marshals uphold the standards and discipline expected of the FRSC officers..

The volunteers, who were carefully selected through a rigorous interview process conducted by regular FRSC officials, began their journey with high expectations and a commitment to public safety. 

Headed by Officer Zayyan Ibrahim, the Idu Unit Commander disclosed that the interview process ensured that only the most dedicated individuals were chosen.

Consequently, those who met the stringent criteria were approved to commence their training under the guidance of seasoned FRSC officers.

The training sessions were conducted by officials from the FRSC Abuja Sector Command, including Officer Igwe Elizabeth Ndidi, Officer Oladimeji Asiwaju, Officer Hollar Abiodun, and the FRSC Surveillance Officers.

Their expertise and dedication played a crucial role in equipping the volunteers with the necessary skills and knowledge.

Dr. Samuel Iroye, the Unit Coordinator (Chairman) of the NOUN Special Marshal Unit, oversaw the training process.

“From the commencement of this training, these volunteers are recognized as Special Marshals.

“Their official induction will take place on August 16, 2024," Iroye said.

The roles and responsibilities of the Special Marshals closely mirror those of the regular Road Safety Officers, as their duties include traffic control, road patrol, the establishment of Road Safety Clubs in schools, public education on road safety, and management of traffic in public places and places of worship.

"The work of a Special Marshal is for those who have a love and passion for ensuring that road users are safe in their daily operations," he added.

Iroye explained that the dedication to public safety is the driving force behind the NOUN FRSC Special Marshal Unit, as it strives to make a positive impact on the community.

It is hoped that as the new marshals prepare for their official induction, the community can look forward to an improved traffic management and enhanced road safety measures, thanks to the tireless efforts of these dedicated volunteers.
