Addressing the theme "The Nigerian University System and its Many Challenges: The Way Forward," Dr. Saliu expressed that the current state of insecurity in the nation poses a significant challenge to the university system. He reported multiple instances of security threats across various university campuses.
The situation has reached a critical point with numerous universities experiencing kidnappings and abductions of faculty members and students. Tragically, some of these incidents have resulted in fatalities, while others remain unresolved with individuals still missing.
Dr. Saliu also noted that such incidents are not isolated to any one region but have been reported across the country, including some universities in the North. The pervasive nature of these security issues is severely impacting the core activities of teaching and research, as well as the overall well-being of the academic institutions.
