The Police Command in Ekiti State has taken swift action by apprehending eight suspected members of various secret cult groups on the campus of Ekiti State University. This development follows a report of disturbances by these groups, threatening the peace within the institution's premises.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Sunday Abutu, disclosed that the arrests were made in response to a distress call received on May 7th, around 6:00 p.m. The report indicated that members of Buccaneer confraternity, Alora confraternity, and Sea Lord groups were engaged in activities that could potentially disrupt peace on the campus.

Abutu stated that the Command swiftly deployed the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) to the scene, leading to the arrest of eight suspects. Among those apprehended were two final year students of political science, a 400-level computer science student, a 300-level accounting student, and two 300-level sociology students. Additionally, a 2023 graduate of the institution and another student from the political science department with an extra year were also detained.

During the operation, some of the fleeing gang members resorted to firing gunshots at the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) carrying the RRS operatives, resulting in damage to the vehicle's windscreen. However, the police were able to secure the area and make the arrests.

Items recovered from the suspects included two yellow face caps adorned with the Buccaneer Confraternity logo, as well as paraphernalia associated with Alora and Sea Lord confraternities. The Command's spokesperson noted that efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining gang members and recover any weapons in their possession.

The swift action taken by the police underscores their commitment to maintaining peace and security within the university campus. Authorities urge students and the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies promptly.
