President Tinubu Signs Bill to Establish Federal University of Sports in Ebonyi
The Federal University of Sports, as the first specialized university of its kind in West Africa, aims to attract students and sports professionals from across the region and beyond, enhancing the profile of Nigeria in the global sports arena.
The recent assent by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Federal University of Sports, Ebonyi State bill has been hailed as a significant and positive development for the region. The bill, which was sponsored by former Senator Obinna Ogba, had been awaiting presidential approval since 2021.

Former Senate Committee Chairman on Sports, Senator Obinna Ogba, who played a key role in sponsoring the bill for the university, praised both the President and local officials for their efforts. “I am pleased with the development of the bill approved by the National Assembly and assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2023,” Ogba stated.
Ogba emphasized the transformative impact that the university is expected to have, not just on Ebonyi State but on Nigeria as a whole.
“This university will significantly benefit the economy of Ebonyi and Nigeria, as it is the first of its kind in West Africa. People from other countries will attend this school.”
