His Profile
Sunday Samuel Oluyamo was born on 30th January, 1968 at Okeluse, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State. He had his elementary education at Ikuobase Primary School, Ofunmwegbe Village, Ovia Local Government Area of the then Bendel State (now Edo State) from 1974 to 1979. Thereafter, he proceeded to Okeluse Anglican Grammar School, Okeluse in 1979 where he obtained the West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1984.
He obtained Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Physics and Solid State Physics and bagged Doctoral degree in condensed matter physics from University of Ibadan, Ibadan in 1990, 1998 and 2009, respectively. He also trained as professional teacher at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife from 2000 to 2002 and graduated with Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
Sunday Oluyamo started his teaching academic career at the College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State as Graduate Assistant in 1992 and rose to the position of Lecturer II in 1998. He also worked briefly at Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo between 1999 and 2000. He joined the services of the Federal University of Technology, Akure in November 2000 as Lecturer II in the Department of Physics and was appointed Professor on 1st October, 2015.
Professor Oluyamo is an academic of repute who has contributed immensely to the body of knowledge in his area of specialization. He has to his credit over 100 articles in reputable journals, conference proceedings and technical papers. He has also made significant contributions to books. He has mentored many young academics in the Department of Physics and has successfully trained and supervised over 20 Masters and 11 PhD candidates to completion. He has also supervised many undergraduate students’ projects. Prof. Oluyamo is well-travelled and has attended and presented papers at both local and international conferences.
Professor Oluyamo has at different times served and still serves as External Assessor as well as Examiner to several universities in Nigeria. They include:
i. Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko;
ii. Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye;
iii. Caleb University, Lagos;
iv. University of Ilorin, Ilorin; and
v. Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo.
He has collaborations with organizations and universities within and outside the country, including:
i. Fintech Associates, Warwick University,
ii. Sheffield Hallam University (UK),
iii. Itemba Laboratory, South Africa and several others.
He is currently a Collaborator and Senior Research Fellow to the Centre of Atmospheric Research (CAR), NASRDA, Abuja, Nigeria.
He is a member of many professional bodies. Most prominent of which are:
i. Science Teachers Association of Nigeria;
ii. Science Association of Nigeria;
iii. Nigeria Institute of Physics;
iv. Institute of Physics; and
v. African Nano Forum.
Before his appointment as Deputy Vice Chancellor (D) in April 2023, Professor Oluyamo, had served the University in different administrative capacities and held various positions of responsibilities, among which are:
i. Coordinator, Physics Electronics Option, Science Laboratory Technology (2004-2007);
ii. Sub-Dean, School of Sciences (2009-2012);
iii. Coordinator, Postgraduate Seminar (2009-2011);
iv. Chairman, Academic planning Committee, School of Physical Sciences from inception;
v. Member, Senate Committee on Academic Planning (2018-Date);
vi. Assistant Associate Director, Pre-degree Programme (May 2014-July 2014);
vii. Associate Director, Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) (2014-2018); and
viii. Pioneer Director, Technology Park and Incubation Centre (Tech-PIC) (2018-2022).
Outside the University, he has served as:
i. Head, Department of Physical Sciences, Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State (2011 - 2012); and
ii. Chairman, Technical Committee of the Technology Incubation Centre of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, Ondo State Centre (2019).
He is the current Chairman, Nigeria Institute of Physics (NIP), Ondo State Chapter. He has also served in numerous Community Development positions such as Secretary, Vice President and Chairman of organizations and the Community where he resides. He had on several occasions been Chairman/member of interview panels; Chairman, Local Organizing Committee of Local and International Conferences; Chairman, Investigative Panels and Secretary to the African Nano Forum.
Professor Oluyamo is married to Mrs. Esther Oluyemisi Oluyamo-Sunsam and the union is blessed with four promising children.
