The Rivers State Police Command has announced the arrest of Fred Monday, a 31-year-old individual who masqueraded as a police Inspector while facilitating criminal activities across various states in Nigeria. The arrest underscores a significant breakthrough in the fight against organized crime and corruption within the police force.
According to a statement from Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police spokesperson, Monday was apprehended on August 9, 2024, at approximately 11:45 PM by operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Rivers State Police Command. The arrest followed a tip-off about a criminal operation in Luegbo Community, Khana Local Government Area. Upon arrival, the police discovered an ongoing cult initiation process.
During the operation, law enforcement officials encountered Monday, who was disguised in full police camouflage and holding the rank of an Inspector. He was found to be armed with an AK-47 rifle, 10 magazines, and 29 rounds of live ammunition. Monday's disguise and weaponry were intended to lend credibility to his role in escorting criminals during their operations.
The investigation revealed that Monday was not only a fraudster but also a member of the Iceland cult group. He admitted to participating in numerous criminal activities under the guise of a police officer. His involvement extended to armed robbery, where he operated as a tricycle rider by day, surveying areas for potential targets to attack at night.
In connection with this operation, five suspects—Mduni Clement, Prosper Wonyingipreye, Kunle Joseph, Eken Evans, and Isaiah Elisha—were arrested. The individuals, all students from Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic, were identified as members of the Vikings confraternity and have been charged and remanded in a correctional center.
Fred Monday confessed to purchasing the AK-47 rifle for N850,000 in 2021 from an accomplice known as Goodluck aka Boy-J. He disclosed that he and other gang members used their police disguises to escort criminals across multiple states, including Akwa Ibom, Edo, Delta, and Rivers State.
Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko stated, “The investigation is ongoing, and we are closing in on other members of this criminal gang. The recovery of the rifle, magazines, and ammunition is a crucial step in dismantling their network and ensuring justice.”
The Rivers State Police Command continues to investigate and seeks to bring all involved parties to justice. This case highlights the importance of vigilance and integrity within the law enforcement community to combat corruption and criminal activities effectively.
